Lions Odds & Ends: Khalil Mack Rumors, Robert Ayers Signing

With the Raiders and Khalil Mack seemingly on different pages, speculation about his next stop will continue to dominate the news until he’s either dealt or signs a new deal in Oakland. On Sunday night, a rumor of him being in Detroit to meet with the Lions‘ brass circulated.

Over -135 -125
Under 105 -105

The Mack-Lions pairing would be a scary one. Arguably the leagues’ best pass rusher coupled with an offense that can get out to a lead and put opposing squads in plenty of obvious passing situations. The rumor has since been debunked and the Lions brought in Robert Ayers.

Ayers, who spent 2017 with the Bucs, recorded only two sacks last season, though Pro Football Focus gave him favorable marks.

Detroit finished last season 19th in defensive DVOA and they brought in Matt Patricia to help improve the unit. In New England, Patricia and Bill Belichick employed a “bend but don’t break” style of defense, sending fewer than four pass-rushers on 445 play during their time together, which is 205 more than the net closest team (Colts).

Don’t expect a lot of blitzing from this team, which means they will need to get good production out of the guys they do send. For now, that group will not include Mack.
